Building Block
Brainchild of Mr. Nick, our bi-weekly"Building Block" offerings give kids the opportunity for student-centered, hands-on learning. On Tuesday, learners created and tested their own aluminum foil boats. There were many different ideas and designs; it became obvious what attributes were needed when they went into the water. Most floated, some started taking on water and sank. There were a few with very thoughtful design and careful craftsmanship, that remained floating, even when ALL our bottle caps were loaded on. We cannot wait to see what they create this week when we test their boats for speed, rather than maximum cargo load.
On Thursday, loose parts entered the offering and learners were given the task of creating bridges. Beam bridges, suspension bridges, truss bridges, arch bridges, we had them all! Watching the kids struggle and work together to create something stronger was a wonderful lesson in cooperation and teamwork. They learned from their mistakes and tried again. Testing their different designs and modifications. Some held cars, others were for walking. All the bridges were unique and the kids felt proud of what the built. It will be fun to see how these types of exercises translate into bigger projects like Odyssey of the Mind and more!
